The Birken Company LLC is a defense software firm based in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, delivering AI/ML, simulation, and systems integration for U.S. military programs. We operate as TBC and bring deep engineering experience to every program we support.

Leadership

TBC is led by Scott Birken, President and Chief Engineer, with 25+ years of senior defense software experience. Our work centers on AI/ML software and advanced military simulations, including scene-generation control for armored-vehicle visualization, integration with vehicle hardware and operator displays, and real-time AI-driven tactical decision support for the crew.

Our background

Our roots span the defense supply base: hands-on software development (C++, embedded environments, drivers, and radio protocols), systems and software requirements in industry-standard tooling, lab and demonstration systems, and technical leadership. That background includes software IPT-style lead roles and contributions to command-and-control software, sensor and actuator integration, OpenCV-based perception in controlled environments, cybersecurity-related device support, and requirements and CONOPS artifacts for internal research and development programs.

Experience also covers integrator and lab-heavy programs: simulation, MIL-STD-1553B and tactical radio–adjacent software, customer-facing demonstrations, and floor-plan and safety-conscious lab build-outs. Our experience spans BAE Systems, Honeywell, General Dynamics Mission Systems, ITT (now part of L3Harris), and DHPC Technologies (now part of Peraton), covering routing stacks, console tooling, BSP work, and automated hardware validation.

AI/ML depth

Our AI and machine learning work covers the full modern stack, grounded in both formal training and production defense experience:

• Supervised learning: XGBoost, AdaBoost, Random Forest, and SVM, applied to real classification and prioritization problems in fielded training systems.
• Deep learning: TensorFlow, including CNNs, sequence and time-series modeling, and natural language processing.
• Reinforcement learning: deep Q-learning (DQN), RL environment design, and simulation pipelines built to accelerate agent training throughput.
• Production integration: ML components deployed within C++/Python real-time control systems, with data hygiene, cross-validation, and regression testing discipline.
